CPI announces finalists for 2019 Polyurethane innovation award

8/22/2019 - Washington, D.C. – The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) announced the Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond football helmet liner and the Dow AquaChill cool coating for comfier bedding as the finalists for this year’s Polyurethane Innovation Award. The Innovation Award is said to be a renowned award throughout the polyurethane industry that recognizes the most inventive commercial technologies over the past 12 months. The finalists this year made striking innovations in the polyurethane industry that increase the health and well-being of consumers. The award will be presented to the winner during the 62nd Polyurethanes Technical Conference, October 7-9 in Orlando, FL. “The Polyurethane Innovation Award recognizes visionary and ground-breaking achievements within our industry,” said Lee Salamone, senior director, CPI. “This award showcases our industry’s proud commitment to developing and advancing technologies that raise our quality of life through sustainable and responsible practices. Our two finalists this year have made great strides innovating products that increase the health, safety and well-being of consumers, and we look forward to their presentations during the Polyurethanes Technical Conference’s opening session. CPI congratulates Riddell and Dow on being named finalists.” The finalists’ descriptions of their innovations follow: Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond football helmet liner: Carbon and Riddell partnered to produce the first-ever, digitally printed liner for the SpeedFlex Precision Diamond football helmet. To make this groundbreaking product, Carbon used athlete data Riddell gathered in their proprietary database of 5 million head impacts to create next-gen head protection. The resulting Diamond helmet liner is printed to be precisely contoured to the athlete’s head. Using Carbon’s pioneering DLS technology, the liner was created using light and oxygen, and incorporates intricate, custom lattice structures with custom energy absorbing materials also developed by Carbon. Carbon and Riddell’s partnership and innovation is said to help keep young athletes safe. Dow AquaChill cool coating for comfier bedding: AquaChill, a water-based phase change material (PCM) coating, maximizes initial and sustained cooling, while providing breathability, optimal durability, best-in-class adhesion and minimal odor. Unlike traditional solvent-based coatings, AquaChill maintains its cooling power beyond the initial point-of-sale without expelling a significant odor, providing additional value to the end-consumer for a good night’s rest.
