Darcy Robison serves as vice president and chief sustainability officer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Robison, who joined Goodyear in 2023, has more than 20 years of experience in sustainability, corporate and social responsibility, regulatory compliance, environmental, health and safety (EHS), and advancing sustainability in a large manufacturing organization. She joined Goodyear from Pentair, where she held roles with increasing responsibility in sustainability, EHS and quality. Robison holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) and a master’s degree in environmental science and policy from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Scott Legleu retires from RDAbbott after four decades in the rubber industry

RDAbbott announced the retirement of Scott Legleu, a rubber industry veteran with 43 years of service. Scott joined RDAbbott as a Business Development Manager in 2017 but began his rubber industry career decades earlier after working as a schoolteacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Colleagues from across the industry and throughout Scott’s long and successful career describe him as honest, helpful, kind, and a good listener. The Rubber Division, ACS plans to honor Scott with a Service Award during their International Elastomer Conference. This award ceremony will take place Thursday from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM in Expo Theater #2 in the David Lawrence Convention Center.

Borealis and Infinium to turn carbon emissions into plastics

Infinium and Borealis have entered into an agreement to enable the production of low-carbon-footprint plastics generated from waste carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. These plastics, known as polyolefins, are commonly used in manufacturing consumer goods including packaging, appliances, apparel and medical devices.

Pittsburgh, PA – The Rubber Division has coordinated a series of valuable panel discussions to examine some industry hot topics in depth. These panels take place in the Expo Theaters during IEC and are FREE for all attendees.

6PPD Panel Discussion – Tuesday, Sept. 10; 2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Review the dangers associated with 6PPD and efforts in the industry to replace or reduce its use. The panel will begin with a toxicology presentation from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, followed by a panel discussion about technological developments around 6PPD replacement.
PFAS Panel Discussion – Tuesday, Sept. 10; 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Learn about the state of regulations restricting use of PFAS substances in the US and Europe. Panelists will discuss how the industry is responding and what is next for fluoropolymer producers and applications.
Rubber Devulcanization Panel Discussion – Wednesday, Sept. 11; 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Ohio announces the creation of Greater Akron Polymer Innovation Hub

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced the creation of Ohio’s third Innovation Hub, a new collaboration that will position the Greater Akron region as a global leader in polymer research, development and technology.

Supported by $31.25 million in state funding from the Ohio Innovation Hubs Program and more than $10 million in local investment, the new Greater Akron Polymer Innovation Hub will accelerate impactful innovations and support new economic growth by capitalizing on the region’s long-standing expertise in polymer science.

Japan Fair Trade Council of the Medical Devices Industry issues warning against Zeon Medical

On August 26, Zeon Medical Inc. (Zeon Medical), a wholly owned subsidiary of Zeon Corporation (Zeon), received a stern warning
from the Japan Fair Trade Council of the Medical Devices Industry (Fair Trade Council). The action was taken on the grounds that money and other compensation paid to medical professionals, which Zeon Medical reported as outsourcing fees for post marketing surveillance and other purposes, constituted the provision of premiums as a means of unjustifiably inducing transactions in medical devices under Article 3 of the Fair Competition Code concerning Restriction on Premium Offers in the Medical Devices Industry (Fair Competition Code) and therefore violated the Fair Competition Code.

Weir awarded £53m contract for tailing solutions in Pakistan

The Weir Group PLC (Weir) has been awarded a £53m contract to provide industry-leading energy efficient, sustainable solutions to the Reko Diq copper-gold project, a 50% owned greenfield development by Barrick Gold Corporation (Barrick). The tier one copper project is located in the Chagai district of Balochistan and is targeting first production in 2028 with an estimated mine life of 40+ years.

During the first phase of the project, Weir will provide fine grinding, separation and tailings solutions. Featured equipment includes Weir’s market leading ENDURON® HPGRs, ENDURON® Elite wet and dry vibrating screens, WARMAN® slurry pumps, and CAVEX® hydrocyclones. Among the equipment to be provided are Weir’s large format HPGRs – the highest capacity design in the market.
