Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and ENEOS complete chemical recycling facility, advancing plastic-to-oil conversion

Tokyo, Japan — Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MCG) and ENEOS Corporation have announced the successful completion of a new chemical recycling facility aimed at converting waste plastics into oil. The facility, located in Japan, is a major step forward in the companies’ joint efforts to promote a circular economy and reduce environmental impact.

The newly constructed plant will serve as the foundation for launching a full-scale plastic-to-oil conversion business. It is designed to process used plastics through a chemical recycling method that breaks down polymers into oil, which can then be reused as raw material for new plastic products or fuel. This approach significantly reduces the need for virgin fossil resources and helps address the growing global issue of plastic waste.

In a move to ensure transparency and sustainability, the facility is also set to acquire ISCC PLUS certification, an internationally recognized standard for sustainable and traceable supply chains. This certification will verify that the recycled materials meet rigorous environmental and social criteria, further reinforcing the companies’ commitment to responsible production.

The project aligns with both MCG’s and ENEOS’s long-term environmental strategies. By leveraging their respective strengths—MCG’s expertise in chemical manufacturing and ENEOS’s capabilities in energy and infrastructure—the two companies aim to establish a robust and scalable model for chemical recycling in Japan and beyond.

The launch of this facility marks a significant milestone in Japan’s transition toward a more sustainable and resource-efficient society. It also reflects the broader industry trend of investing in advanced recycling technologies to meet global sustainability goals.
