Solvay to cut emissions by 550 tons with solar power at facility in China
Brussels, Belgium – Solvay has reached a deal with Engie China to begin its first solar power project in Zhenjiang, China. Scheduled to be completed in April 2022, the project has a designed solar power capacity of 891 KW; it will cut the Zhenjiang site’s emissions by 550 ton carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
Solvay will install over 9,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels on the qualified rooftops of the Zhenjiang production site and utilize the renewable solar electricity generated by the project for daily production. Engie China will take full responsibility for the investment, installation and maintenance of the panels, while Solvay will purchase the power.
“As Solvay’s first solar power project in China, the Zhenjiang rooftop photovoltaic program is a crucial step to achieve our sustainability ambitions. It will serve as an inspiration and prototype for further energy transition projects at our operations across China,” said Solvay Greater China President Leo Sun. “We will continue to reduce emissions and enable greener products for clients, while also contributing to China’s carbon neutrality goals.”
This project is in line with the company’s Solvay One Planet roadmap, which aims to double the rate at which the company reduces emissions, with a target of curbing greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent and aligning its trajectory with the “well below 2°C temperature increase” goal outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
