Akron delays demolition of former Firestone headquarters

Akron, OH – The City of Akron has announced new developments regarding the long-vacant former Firestone headquarters property at 1200 Firestone Blvd., as officials continue to balance redevelopment plans with historic preservation concerns.

Asbestos remediation at the site is nearly complete, but demolition remains on hold while the city works with the State Historic Preservation Office to resolve outstanding issues. Akron has requested an extension to respond to a dispute letter and will present several preservation and redevelopment options at a special Urban Design and Historic Preservation Committee meeting scheduled for Feb. 17.

City leaders are reviewing multiple concepts, including preserving parts of the historic structure or clock tower, incorporating historic elements into new construction, or relocating select features to another site. Final decisions will depend on cost, structural feasibility, and future redevelopment plans.

Officials say the goal is to address safety and nuisance concerns while honoring the site’s historical significance and moving the property toward productive reuse.
