Denka brings hydroelectric power plant online as part of carbon neutrality goal set for 2050

Tokyo, Japan -Denka Company announced that Denka and Kurobegawa Electric Power Company, its joint venture with Hokuriku Electric Power Company began the commercial operation of New Himekawa No. 6 Power Plant, a new hydroelectric power plant in Itoigawa-shi, Niigata Prefecture, on April 5.
New Himekawa No. 6 Power Plant will have a maximum output of 27,900 kW and is expected to generate a maximum of 87.7 million kWh of power annually (net gain), one of the largest capacity natural inflow power plants in Japan. The operation of this plant will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by 44,000 tons per year and to expanding the use of clean energy towards the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Denka has operated hydroelectric power plants enabling it to generate its own power for over 100 years, and currently has 16 hydroelectric power plants, including Kurobegawa Electric Power, in the Himekawa and Omigawa drainage basins. With the addition of New Himekawa No. 6 Power Plant, Denka now owns 17 hydroelectric power plants*, yielding a total maximum output of approximately 140,000 kW, equivalent to the power used by around 180,000 households, and boasts the second-largest capacity in the domestic private manufacturing sector.
