Joel Neilsen replaces the retiring Dave Schultz as technical editor of Rubber World Magazine

Joel Neilsen has been named the new technical editor for Rubber World magazine, taking over from Dave Schultz, who is retiring at the end of the year. Neilsen brings 46 years of experience in the rubber industry. He graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Cleveland State University and started his career at BFGoodrich Tire in Akron, OH, focusing on tire development and production. He later worked in sales development at Uniroyal Chemical, served as a technical service representative for Bayer (now Lanxess) in rubber chemicals and synthetic elastomers, and provided technical service at Sid Richardson Carbon.

Over 85,000 Melii baby silicone spoons recalled due to choking hazard

This recall involves Melii Baby Silicone Spoons for babies with animal shapes at the handle. They were sold in packs of either three or four and as a five-piece silicone feeding set. The feeding sets were sold in cat, dino, dog, shark and unicorn shapes. The spoons measure about six inches long. The affected spoons have the following date codes: the three-pack 2024-01 and the four-pack have 2023-12 to 2024-05 printed on the back of the spoons. All spoons in all Baby 5-Piece Silicone Feeding Sets are affected by this recall.

Cryogenic deflashing for injection molded rubber parts

During rubber injection molding, excess material called flash forms on the surfaces of parts. Unless this unwanted rubber is removed, surface quality suffers. In product assemblies, flash on molded components like rubber gaskets and o-rings can interfere with seating, mating and sealing. A quality injection mold and a skilled injection molder can reduce the amount of flash; but even so-called flashless molds are not immune to this common defect.
