Birch Chemicals moves to sustainable additives for moisture control products

Barnetby, U.K. – Birch Chemicals has begun replacing petrochemical oil additives with plant-derived alternatives in all its product ranges starting with calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide products.

“Petrochemical oil is a finite resource, and one that will place an increasing stress on our planet as it continues to be relied upon,” says Mark Baldwin, Birch Chemicals managing director. “That’s why we’ve made the choice to begin replacing all of the petrochemical oil additives in the Birch Chemicals range with greener alternatives, reflecting our ongoing commitment to sustainability best practices.”

“We are currently planning to bring the change to market within the year, and home-grown British vegetable oil will be our first choice for replacement additives,” added Baldwin.

For Birch Chemicals customers and distributors, the change will be unnoticeable. Birch Chemicals remains dedicated to providing industry leading moisture control solutions for rubber and plastics.

“We have run a variety of tests and trials to ensure the replacement additives deliver a performance equal to or greater than petrochemical oil,” said Baldwin. “When we first began considering alternatives, it was of the utmost importance to us that there were no drops in performances, no negative changes to product shelf life and no changes to the customer experience, and we’ve made sure to honor that.”
