Braskem developed world’s first renewable-source polyethylene wax

São Paulo, Brazil – Braskem has launched the world’s first renewable-source polyethylene (PE) wax, used in the production of adhesives, cosmetics, coatings and compounds . The product, commonly used as a viscosity modifying agent in diverse formulations, has the same properties and delivers the same performance as the version made from fossil-based PE. Produced from sugarcane ethanol, the new solution entails lower CO 2 footprint, is recyclable and has applications in multiple markets.

With the arrival of the renewable-source PE wax in the global market, Braskem has innovated and expanded its I’m greenTM bio-based portfolio, offering products that go beyond the resins currently being supplied. The I’m greenT brand represents Braskem’s commitment to the circular economy and comprises solutions from renewable and recycled sources.

“Braskem has been producing bio-based plastic for over a decade. Since then, the company has been looking for ways to support its customers in the search for new products to reduce their carbon footprint. After PE and EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) I’m green bio-based products, Braskem is bringing renewable-sourced PE wax to adhesives, cosmetics, coatings and compounding markets, further underscoring our commitment to become a carbon neutral company by 2050.Since then, Braskem has been seeking ways to support its customers in search of new products to reduce the carbon footprint.

The I’m greenTM bio-based polyethylene that is used to produce the renewable PE wax is capable of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its production cycle. In addition, the production of renewable polyethylene from ethanol saves 80% energy in relation to the traditional production routes. “We work every day moved by the goal of combining innovation and sustainable development to create a better impact on the planet and society. This new launch is another result of our effort to decarbonize our business value chain,” concluded Gustavo Sergi.
