Bridgestone announces layoffs at two Spanish plants amid market challenges

Zaventem, Belgium – Bridgestone Hispania Manufacturing has announced a significant workforce reduction at two of its tire plants in Spain, citing profound changes in the European tire market. The company plans to initiate a collective dismissal procedure affecting over 500 employees at its facilities in Puente San Miguel (Cantabria) and Basauri (Bizkaia).

The layoffs come as Bridgestone faces a challenging macroeconomic environment marked by inflation, uncertainty, and regulatory changes. Additionally, the rise of non-European manufacturers has intensified competitive pressure, leading to a contraction in the radial agricultural and truck/bus tire sectors.

Bridgestone’s operations in Spain have been impacted by the ongoing automotive crisis in the country. In 2023, the company introduced a temporary employment regulation file (ERTE) to reduce production across its four manufacturing sites. The current layoffs are part of a broader strategy to adapt its production structure to align with the evolving market conditions.

The affected plants in Puente San Miguel and Basauri specialize in agricultural and truck/bus tires, respectively. The collective dismissal procedure will involve negotiations with employee representatives to finalize the number of layoffs and identify the workers affected.

Bridgestone’s decision underscores the need for the company to enhance its competitiveness in a rapidly changing market. The company has expressed its commitment to supporting the affected employees during this transition period.
