Continental is transferring technologies from concept tire to series production

As early as 2021, the tire manufacturer focused on the use of silica from agricultural waste, polyester from recycled PET and other renewable and recyclable materials with the Conti GreenConcept concept tire. Continental has now incorporated many of these technologies into its series tires. With the UltraContact NXT, the company launched the most sustainable series tire to date last year. This underlines Continental’s claim to be the most progressive manufacturer in the tire industry when it comes to sustainability.

Hyundai unveils snow chain-integrated tire

The snow chain-integrated tire technology consists of a wheel and tire assembly that feature radial grooves at regular intervals, like a pizza, with modules made of shape memory alloy inserted into these channels.

This technology takes advantage of the shape memory alloy’s ability to return to its original shape when an electric current is applied. During normal driving, the shape memory alloy located inside the wheel is compressed into the shape of the letter ‘L’ and does not contact the road surface. When the driver activates the function, an electric current is applied, causing the shape memory alloy to revert to its original profile; the material forms a ‘J’ shape, pushing the module out of the tire to make contact with the surface, improving grip, stability and safety on snowy roads.

Scientists observe the molecular motion of rubber components in tires

An international research team led by scientists from the University of Tokyo, Ibaraki University, and European XFEL has now observed the molecular motion within samples of polybutadiene and carbon black, which occurs naturally as a result of the material structure, with a time resolution of 890 nanoseconds (billionths of a second)—the fastest resolution obtained in such studies so far—at the European XFEL’s SPB/SFX instrument.

High molecular weight functionalized batch SSBR for EV tires

In December 2015, the United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Paris. The conference negotiated the Paris Agreement, which is a global agreement on the reduction of climate change. At the follow-up climate change conference in Marrakech (COP22) in November 2016, the member states of the Kyoto Protocol agreed to set the goal of limiting global warming to a still acceptable level of less than 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels. This target requires that the zero emission of CO2 is achieved soon.

Electric vehicle tread development

Developing tire tread formulations for electric vehicles (EVs) presents a unique challenge. Instantaneous high torque and vehicle dynamics demand traction performance, while owner expectations for battery life and range highlight the need for very low rolling resistance compounds. In addition, vehicle weight and new environmental pressures increase the need for improved durability and abrasion resistance.

The two-roll plasticizer (TRP)

The TRP Reworker is a resource saving technology for the economical processing of rework materials based on the two-roll plasticizer (TRP) with integrated Roll Ex gear pump. In an automatic process, unvulcanized rubber compounds are processed particularly gently and continuously in order to return this rework material to the production process. In tire production, compound waste is unavoidable due to the process.
