Hyundai unveils snow chain-integrated tire

The snow chain-integrated tire technology consists of a wheel and tire assembly that feature radial grooves at regular intervals, like a pizza, with modules made of shape memory alloy inserted into these channels.

This technology takes advantage of the shape memory alloy’s ability to return to its original shape when an electric current is applied. During normal driving, the shape memory alloy located inside the wheel is compressed into the shape of the letter ‘L’ and does not contact the road surface. When the driver activates the function, an electric current is applied, causing the shape memory alloy to revert to its original profile; the material forms a ‘J’ shape, pushing the module out of the tire to make contact with the surface, improving grip, stability and safety on snowy roads.

Guill rheology lab now available as a commercial service

Guill Tool announces that its state-of-the-art rheology lab is offering its services for a fee to all those interested. Measuring the flow characteristics of plastics and rubber helps predict how a customer’s material will flow through the company’s extrusion dies before production. In addition, tooling geometry is virtually optimized, and the project can be viewed in 3D CAD. Machines used include a rotational rheometer, scanning calorimeter, thermal conductivity meter and a new CT scanner.

Continental to use driving simulator for testing and tire development from now on

Continental has put its new driving simulator for tires into operation. It will be used from now on for new and further tire developments, especially in the original equipment business. An intensive test phase of around twelve months preceded the operational phase. Virtual tire tests will save costs, raw materials and shorten development times. The high-tech system is known as a driver-in-the-loop simulator (DIL), which calculates the exact driving dynamics parameters for the tires and the respective test vehicle. Thanks to its high maneuverability, the simulator can provide Continental’s professional test drivers with subjective driving impressions that are comparable to those from tire tests on a real test track.
