– Covestro AG has started production in its new plant for polyurethane elastomers systems at its integrated site in Shanghai, China. Groundbreaking for it had been announced in summer 2022. The investment is in the double-digit million Euro range. It is part of a series of investments in the Elastomers raw materials business the company undertook in the past few years worldwide, e.g. in its sites in Thailand and Spain. The new plant in Shanghai shall help meet ever rising demand for the material in the Asia-Pacific region, for example in renewable energy applications such as offshore cable protection and silicon wafer cutting rollers of photovoltaic panels, among others.

The historic Goodyear sign has served as both a Goodyear and Akron icon and symbolizes the company’s roots in the Middlebury neighborhood in Akron. In celebration of the company’s 125th anniversary, Goodyear worked with The Well CDC to restore the sign, which has not been operational in nearly a decade.
“This project shines a light on Goodyear’s continued commitment to invest in Akron and in the communities where we live and work,” said Laura Duda, senior vice president and chief communications officer. “We are thankful to work together with great community partners like The Well CDC to support the neighborhood that Goodyear has called home for the past 125 years.”

UTH GmbH’s management systems in the areas of quality and environment have now been certified according to the internationally recognized norms DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001. The focus of the worldwide operating machine manufacturer was on the validation of their in-house environmental management. “We want to transparently show that social responsibility and our commitment to sustainability is anchored in UTH’s corporate management”, says Managing Director Peter J. – Continental ended the second quarter of 2023 with strong earnings again in the Tires group sector and high order intake in Automotive of around €8.6 billion. The ContiTech group sector achieved solid results, while earnings in Automotive fell short of expectations, mainly due to currency effects and continuing costs for special freight. Furthermore, inflation-related price negotiations scheduled for the second quarter are still ongoing. As a result of updated market expectations in the tire-replacement business, Continental has adjusted its outlook for sales in the Tires group sector and for consolidated sales. The outlook for the adjusted EBIT margins remains unchanged. The technology company therefore expects consolidated earnings to increase in the second half of the year.

In June Bill Morgan Tire in partnership with Continental Tire announced the opening of the first retread facility in Lexington, Kentucky in 40 years.
The facility boasts more than 25,000 square feet and is one of the largest commercial truck tire facilities in Kentucky. With this new facility Bill Morgan Tire is expecting to do more than 15,000 retreads in the first year of offering the service.

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. announced a collaboration with Sumitomo Riko Company Limited and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. This initiative is designed to further the development of recycling technologies, paving the way for a circular economy.

– Continental is now also offering remote tire monitoring in real time for trailers through its ContiConnect Live digital solution. The system works equally well with freestanding and coupled trailers. A telematics unit can receive tire sensor data and send it to the ContiConnect portal. The system then can provide continuous information about the inflation status and temperature of the trailer tires when connected to a power unit

California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has adopted a rule that requires manufacturers of motor vehicle tires for sale in California to evaluate safer alternatives to 6PPD, a chemical that helps reduce tire cracking and extends the useful life of tires. DTSC’s regulation to add motor vehicle tires containing 6PPD to the state’s list of Priority Products, which was proposed in 2022, will take effect on October 1, 2023. Domestic and foreign manufacturers will have until November 30th, 2023 to notify DTSC if they manufacture 6PPD-containing tires that are placed into the stream of commerce in California. DTSC is working with the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) to help tiremakers navigate the process.
