EU delays deforestation regulation by 12 months

The European Council agreed to amending the EU deforestation regulation, delaying its implementation by 12 months. This extension will provide third countries, member states, operators, and traders adequate time to prepare for their due diligence obligations. These obligations require ensuring that certain commodities and products sold in or exported from the EU are deforestation-free. This includes products made from cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, rubber, and some of their derived products.

Malaysian natural rubber production decreased by 5 percent in August

Malaysia’s Department of Statics reports that natural rubber (NR) production decreased by 5.2 percent in August 2024 (35,979 tons) as compared to July 2024 (37,960 tons). Year-on-year comparison showed that the production of NR increased by 14.9 per cent (August 2023: 31,309 tons). Production of NR in August 2024 for Malaysia was mainly contributed by small holders sector (88.1%) as compared to estates sector (11.9%).

Yokohama Rubber’s BluEarth-Van RY55 tires coming factory-equipped on Honda’s mini-EV, N-VAN e:

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced that it is supplying its BluEarth-Van RY55 tires as original equipment (OE) to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. for use on the automaker’s new commercial-use mini-EV (electric vehicle), N-VAN e:, which will be launched in Japan in October 2024. The N-VAN e: is being equipped with 145/80R13 82/80N LT size tires.

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) announced the election of Jeff Barna, President and CEO of Yokohama Tire Corporation, as Chair of the Board of Directors. Barna will serve a two-year term through October 2026. The USTMA Board also elected Matthew Cabe, President and CEO of Michelin North America, Inc. as a new Director.
As Chair, Barna succeeds Alexis Garcin, President and CEO of Michelin North America, Inc., who is stepping down from the USTMA Board to undertake a new role at Michelin.
