Firestone Ag tire plant offers voluntary separations to mitigate layoffs
Des Moines, IA – Firestone’s Des Moines Ag Tire Plant has recently introduced a voluntary separation program, offering severance packages to employees willing to leave the company. This decision comes as the agricultural manufacturing industry faces ongoing demand constraints, prompting the company to reduce its workforce. The voluntary separation option is available to all employees, except those in the Maintenance and Powerhouse departments, and aims to minimize the impact of potential layoffs.
The company has offered a $35,000 severance payment to employees who choose to participate in the program. This initiative is part of Firestone’s broader strategy to remain competitive in a challenging market. “Bridgestone regularly evaluates all aspects of its business to ensure we remain competitive and that resources are allocated in a manner that best supports our business strategy,” said Emily Weaver, Director of Communications for Bridgestone, the parent company of Firestone. The company has set a deadline of January 15 for employees to express their interest in the voluntary separation option.
The United Steelworkers Union 310L, representing the plant’s production workers, has been actively involved in discussions with Firestone to ensure fair treatment of employees. Union President Keenan Bell mentioned that many workers are considering the offer, with some planning to use the severance money for further education or new career opportunities. This collaborative approach aims to support employees during this transition period and provide them with options for their future.
This move by Firestone reflects broader trends in the agricultural sector, where companies are grappling with decreased demand and economic challenges. By offering voluntary separation packages, Firestone hopes to manage its workforce more effectively while supporting employees in their next steps. The company remains committed to monitoring market conditions and adjusting its strategies as needed to navigate these difficult times.
