Goodyear Blimps to soar over Akron in centennial celebration

Akron, OH — In a historic tribute to a century of aviation excellence, Goodyear is set to launch all three of its iconic blimps—Wingfoot One, Wingfoot Two, and Wingfoot Three—into the skies over Akron, Ohio, this week. The event marks the 100th anniversary of the Goodyear Blimp, a symbol that has become synonymous with American innovation and aerial spectacle.

Dubbed a “Victory Lap,” the celebration will span three days, from June 3 to June 5, offering residents and visitors a rare opportunity to witness the full fleet in flight together. The blimps will glide over key locations in Akron, including Wingfoot Lake State Park, downtown Akron, and East Akron, creating a visual tribute to the company’s deep roots in the region.

The festivities kick off on June 3 with a flyover during the Akron RubberDucks baseball game at Canal Park, where the first 1,000 fans will receive commemorative t-shirts featuring the blimps. Additional viewing opportunities include the Akron State of the City Address at Lock 3 and scenic vistas from Wingfoot Lake State Park.

This once-in-a-lifetime event is part of a broader centennial campaign that includes a 100-city aerial tour and a sweepstakes offering fans a chance to fly aboard one of the legendary airships. For Akron, however, the celebration is especially poignant—Goodyear’s blimps have long been a fixture in the city’s skyline and a proud emblem of its industrial heritage.

As the engines hum and the blimps rise into the summer sky, Akron will look up not just at aircraft, but at a century of history, innovation, and hometown pride floating gently above.
