Smithers Suzhou Laboratory adds 3D movement testing capability

Akron, OH — Smithers has announced the addition of three-dimensional (3D) movement testing capabilities at its Materials Science and Engineering Product Testing laboratory in Suzhou, China.

Three-dimensional (3D) movement testing is a valuable method for validating automotive hoses, especially turbocharger and coolant hoses, for both electric vehicles (EV) and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. 3D movement testing simulates specific real-world conditions, which allows automotive component manufacturers to better predict the performance and durability of their products while in service.

The new 3D movement tester has three linear axes, a drive system, a control system, and an end effector. The system is automated, reprogrammable, and multifunctional. Specifications such as load, dimension, and stroke are customizable, and samples have free range of movement on multiple planes. Integrating the 3D movement tester with an impulse tester allows for the introduction of other variables during testing, such as pressure, temperature, and humidity.

“Smithers is deeply committed to supporting our clients’ innovation goals with comprehensive R&D testing capabilities, and we make all decisions about our testing capability and capacity upgrades with their needs in mind,” said Derek Read, Vice President of Asia-Pacific and Global Development, Smithers Materials Science and Engineering Division. “This new three-dimensional movement tester was just the first step in a long-term plan to add more sophisticated pressure and vibration capabilities to our laboratory in Suzhou, so we can serve the testing needs of hose and component manufacturers in a wide range of industries.”

The 3D movement tester is fully operational and conducting testing for clients. To learn more about the 3D movement tester or discuss a project, contact Steve Zhang at +86 18136196132 or szhang@smithers.com.

The Materials Science and Engineering Product Testing laboratory in Suzhou was first opened in early 2019 to serve the needs of Smithers clients in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. Product testing capabilities include pressure, vibration, temperature, impulse, burst, leak, vacuum, fluid compatibility, fatigue, corrosion, and cleanliness.
