Researchers develop new fiber composite material with cellulose reinforcement fibers

The German Institutes for Textile and Fiber with the project partners CG TEC, Cordenka, ElringKlinger, Fiber Engineering and Technikum Laubholz are developing a new fiber composite material (CELLUN) with cellulose reinforcement fibers. The matrix of the material is a thermoplastic cellulose derivative that can be processed in industrial processing methods such as hot pressing or pultrusion. CELLUN made from renewable biopolymers enables the replacement of glass or carbon fibers in the manufacture of industrial molded parts.

Silica first found its way into elastomers as a filler in the 1950s, when it was used in shoe soles. By the 1970s, its use quickly expanded, as silica began being tested in heavy truck tires, passenger tires, engine mounts, gaskets and other rubber products. This expansion was due to growing information supporting its ability to increase adhesion, lower heat buildup and increase tear resistance. It was not until the early 1990s that Michelin proved in a commercially viable manner that the combination of precipitated silica and silane in a tire tread composition resulted in lower rolling resistance and increased wet traction.

Wacker expands production of silicone sealants at Nünchritz site

In response to growing demand, the WACKER chemical group is expanding its production and cartridge filling capacities for silicone sealants at its Nünchritz site. The expansion will increase the company’s capability to supply customers, who contract WACKER to produce ready-to-use silicone sealants for their direct sales. Some €20 million has been budgeted for the new manufacturing lines, which are scheduled to begin production in the fall of 2024. Construction is expected to start before the end of this year, subject to approval from the regulatory authorities involved. The expansion project will create additional new jobs at the site.
