Researchers develop green chemistry to recycle silicone

Silicone and other siloxane-based polymers are in countless consumer products, but their popularity comes with a catch: Almost all of them are thrown into landfills after one use.

Pioneering research at Bowling Green State University, however, could help change that.

Dr. Joe Furgal, an associate professor in the BGSU Chemistry Department, is spearheading a research project studying the use of room-temperature depolymerization to recycle or upcycle silicone, thus keeping them out of landfills and saving massive amounts of energy required to create new polymers.

Synthetic leather combines genuine leather qualities with sustainability

Synthetic leathers made from silicone (Si) have superior tactile feel, durability, recyclability, ease of cleaning and inherent fire resistance, but have poor abrasion and cratch resistance due to the inherent properties of silicones. LuxSense is a first of its kind silicone-organic hybrid synthetic leather that combines the benefits of both to become the first synthetic leather that competes with authentic leather on performance, and exceeds all leathers on sustainability.

Wacker expands production of silicone sealants at Nünchritz site

In response to growing demand, the WACKER chemical group is expanding its production and cartridge filling capacities for silicone sealants at its Nünchritz site. The expansion will increase the company’s capability to supply customers, who contract WACKER to produce ready-to-use silicone sealants for their direct sales. Some €20 million has been budgeted for the new manufacturing lines, which are scheduled to begin production in the fall of 2024. Construction is expected to start before the end of this year, subject to approval from the regulatory authorities involved. The expansion project will create additional new jobs at the site.
