USTMA projects modest growth in U.S. tire shipments for 2026

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) released its February 2026 shipment forecast, projecting a modest increase in total tire shipments across the U.S. market compared with the prior year. According to the association’s latest data, total shipments are expected to reach 338.9 million units in 2026, up from 336.3 million units in 2025 and from 332.7 million recorded in 2019. The expected total would surpass the previous high of 337.3 million units in 2024, underscoring continued growth in the sector.

Continental named “Tire Manufacturer of the Year”

Continental was once again named “Tire Manufacturer of the Year” at this year’s Tire Technology Awards for Innovation and Excellence. The independent jury cited the company’s introduction of new tire technologies, innovative measuring methods and continuous improvements to its production processes as setting new industry benchmarks. Continental also received the “Environmental Achievement of the Year – Manufacturing” award for the work it has done to reduce water withdrawal per metric ton of product in its tire production. The awards were presented by an independent panel of experts during the Tire Technology Expo on March 3 in Hanover. Launched in 2008, the awards are considered among the most important independent honors in the international tire industry. Continental has now been voted “Manufacturer of the Year” five times, including last year.

Continental phases out coal and heavy fuel oil in tire production worldwide

Continental has reached an important milestone in its global sustainability strategy: Coal and heavy fuel oil have been fully phased out across all tire production sites. Since January 2026, all plants have adopted alternative energy sources to generate the steam required for manufacturing tires and heating. These alternatives include biomass, biogas, electricity from renewable sources, and alternative fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas in order to ensure a constant energy supply.

Nokia Tyres factory is the first LEED Gold certified tire factory in the world

Nokian Tyres’ production building at the factory in Romania has earned LEED v4 Gold certification for sustainable building from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first LEED Gold certified tire factory in the world.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely recognized sustainable building rating system in the world. Buildings with LEED certification consume less energy and water, have lower CO2 emissions, divert more waste from landfills, and are healthier environments for people.
