Goodyear to close South African manufacturing plant after 78 years, affecting 900 jobs

Kariega, South Africa – Goodyear South Africa has announced it will shut down its manufacturing plant in Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) by the end of 2025, ending nearly eight decades of tire production in the Eastern Cape. The decision is part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at optimizing the company’s operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The closure will impact approximately 900 employees, with the company having already issued retrenchment notices. Goodyear has pledged to implement support measures for affected workers, including potential redeployment opportunities and transition assistance.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) expressed deep concern over the announcement, calling it a devastating blow to the local economy. Union representatives highlighted the growing economic challenges in the region, especially following other recent industrial closures.

Despite the manufacturing shutdown, Goodyear has confirmed it will maintain its commercial presence in South Africa through continued sales, distribution, and its HiQ retail network. The company emphasized that the move is intended to enhance operational efficiency and ensure long-term sustainability in a challenging global market.

The Kariega plant, which has been a cornerstone of the local economy since its establishment 78 years ago, has played a significant role in South Africa’s automotive and manufacturing sectors. Its closure marks a significant shift in the country’s industrial landscape and raises concerns about rising unemployment in the Eastern Cape, where the jobless rate is already among the highest in the country.
