Gummiwerk Kraiburg achieves climate goals ahead of schedule
Waldkraiburg, Germany – Gummiwerk KRAIBURG is setting new standards in the compounding industry: As early as January 1, 2026, the company achieved CO₂ neutrality for indirect emissions from energy (Scope 2) in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). At the same time, direct CO₂ emissions (Scope 1) will be reduced by more than 95 percent compared with the 2021 baseline by the end of 2026. This means that the production of Gummiwerk KRAIBURG’s compounds generates significantly fewer CO₂ emissions. The company is thus achieving its self-imposed climate targets well ahead of schedule. At the same time, it is solidifying its pioneering role in climate protection and sustainability within the European compounding industry.
This success is the result of a sustainability strategy systematically developed over many years. Gummiwerk KRAIBURG has long pursued a structured approach to environmental and energy management, as evidenced, among other things, by its certification under ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 50001 (energy management), its commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the regular, independent assessment of its sustainability performance by EcoVadis.
With its “Vision 2030” plan, adopted in 2023, Gummiwerk KRAIBURG set itself the goal of reducing CO₂ emissions at its site by 75 percent by 2030. Thanks to consistent investments and strategic decisions, this goal will now be achieved several years ahead of schedule and even significantly exceeded.
“Our progress shows that ambitious climate protection and economic success are not mutually exclusive,” explains Managing Director Dr. Darijo Mijolović. “We are taking a leading role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain.”
This development was made possible by the systematic transition of the energy supply at the Waldkraiburg production site. With the decommissioning of the company’s own combined heat and power plant and the prior connection to the district heating network operated by Stadtwerke Waldkraiburg, all previous natural gas consumption has been replaced by geothermal energy. In addition, the company has decided to cover its entire electricity demand exclusively with green electricity from hydropower starting in 2026.
The results are already visible today: The company’s corporate carbon footprint (Scopes 1 and 2) decreased from 4,519 metric tons of CO₂ equivalents in 2021 to 2,890 metric tons in 2025 and is projected to amount to only about 140 metric tons of CO₂ equivalents in 2026. This development offers the company’s customers significant added value: Thanks to the significantly reduced carbon footprint of Gummiwerk KRAIBURG’s compounds, they can lower their Scope 3 emissions throughout the supply chain and support the achievement of their own sustainability goals.
However, with the Scope 2 neutrality it has now achieved and the drastic reduction in direct emissions, the company has already reached a milestone that goes far beyond its own objectives and serves as a benchmark for the industry. Gummiwerk KRAIBURG intends to continue consistently advancing its sustainability performance in the future. In addition to reducing specific energy consumption, the company is focusing on the complete transition of its vehicle fleet to electric vehicles, waste prevention, promoting workplace safety, and continuously improving its environmental and carbon footprint.
