Lehigh University and MARPG celebrate 50 years of polymer innovation at 2025 symposium
Bethlehem, PA — Lehigh University’s Polymer Science & Engineering Department is marking its 50th anniversary with a full-day educational symposium in collaboration with the Mid Atlantic Rubber and Plastics Group (MARPG). The event, set for Tuesday, October 21, 2025, will take place at Lehigh’s Iacocca Hall and is open to both in-person and remote attendees.
The symposium promises a blend of technical insight, historical reflection, and community celebration. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with light breakfast and registration, followed by opening remarks from Lehigh President Joseph Helble and Professor Raymond Pearson, who will reflect on the department’s five-decade journey. MARPG Chairperson Joe Martin and Vice-Chairperson Evan Silo will introduce the organization’s role in advancing the industry.
Morning sessions will feature keynote speaker Mohamed El-Aasser discussing the evolution and future of polymer science, followed by talks on supply chain impacts and troubleshooting elastomer issues. The morning will also include recognition of MARPG emeritus members and brief introductions from corporate partners.
A catered lunch will offer networking opportunities and a video presentation highlighting alumni and current students. Afternoon sessions will include a keynote by Northwestern’s John Rogers on research and innovation, followed by presentations on failure analysis and industry trends. Bridgitte Budhall, newly appointed Chair of the Plastics Engineering Department at UMass Lowell, will close the technical portion of the day.
The event will conclude with a retirement celebration for Professor Raymond Pearson, honoring his decades of contributions to Lehigh and the polymer science community. Colleagues, students, and friends will offer toasts and share memories during a farewell reception.
Registration is now open. In-person attendance is \$80 for MARPG members and \$85 for non-members. Remote access is available for \$10 (members) and \$15 (non-members). For more information and to register, visit the MARPG website or Lehigh University’s event page.
