Malaysia allocates RM9.9 million to support rubber sector
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — The Malaysian government has stepped up support for the country’s rubber sector by allocating RM9.9 million to 35 midstream and downstream projects, including initiatives specifically targeting rubber glove manufacturers, according to the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities.
In a statement released on the Parliament’s official website on Feb. 9, the ministry highlighted that of the total allocation, RM3.5 million has been directed toward 10 projects within the rubber glove segment — a major subsector of Malaysia’s globally recognized rubber industry.
The funded projects span a range of activities aimed at enhancing industry performance, including capacity building, automation, digitalisation, green technology adoption, and sustainability efforts, the ministry added. These measures are designed to modernise operations in both midstream and downstream stages of the rubber value chain.
The ministry’s response came as part of a written reply to a parliamentary question from Datuk Wira Dr. Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN–Kubang Pasu), who sought details on government efforts to fortify the downstream segment of the rubber sector and, in particular, the rubber glove industry.
Beyond financial support, the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) and the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) have been tasked with promoting Malaysian rubber products in key global markets. According to the ministry, promotional activities are underway in major economies including the United States, Europe, China, India, and the Middle East, as well as populous and emerging African markets.
To further strengthen competitiveness, the Skim Bantuan Industri MRC (SBIM) program provides around 20 different types of incentives aimed especially at small and medium enterprises. These incentives help firms explore export markets, achieve product certification, invest in new equipment, build branding capacity, enhance skills, and meet sustainability standards.
Malaysia is one of the world’s leading players in rubber production and downstream rubber products, with the rubber glove industry being particularly significant on the export front. Continued government support through funding, global marketing, and industry incentives is expected to bolster the sector’s long-term growth and resilience in international markets.
