Underinflated tires cost U.S. drivers $18.6 billion each year

Nashville, TN – American drivers are overspending an estimated $18.6 billion each year on fuel, largely due to underinflated tires. Nearly half of all vehicles on the road are affected, according to a new report from Firestone Complete Auto Care. As the summer travel season kicks off, the company suggests that the money saved from properly inflated tires could fund an extra 500-mile road trip annually for many drivers.

The findings are based on data collected from 9.7 million vehicles serviced at more than 1,800 Firestone locations between June 2024 and March 2025. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which forces vehicles to consume more fuel. This condition also accelerates tire wear and contributes to higher vehicle emissions.

Melissa Vaglio, vice president of retail operations at Bridgestone Retail Operations, emphasized the importance of tire maintenance. She noted that proper tire inflation not only saves money but also supports environmental sustainability and road safety. Vaglio encouraged drivers to take advantage of free tire pressure checks and air top-offs available at Firestone locations.

The report, titled “How to Get Money from Thin Air: The Hidden Benefits of Proper Tire Inflation,” revealed that 42 percent of cars serviced had underinflated tires. On average, tire pressure was 13 PSI below the recommended level. The District of Columbia, Hawaii, and California had the highest rates of underinflated tires, while New Hampshire and Rhode Island had the lowest. Sports cars and minivans were the vehicle types most frequently found with low tire pressure.

The environmental impact is also significant. Eliminating the need for 4.5 billion extra gallons of gasoline annually could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 40.5 million metric tons—the equivalent of recycling over two million garbage trucks’ worth of waste instead of sending it to landfills.

Firestone advises drivers to check their tire pressure monthly, before long trips, and when carrying heavy loads. Proper inflation not only improves fuel efficiency but also enhances vehicle handling, reduces uneven tire wear, and can extend tire life. Tire pressure guidelines can be found in the vehicle’s owner’s manual or on the placard inside the driver’s side door.

Drivers can visit any Firestone Complete Auto Care location for a complimentary tire pressure check and inflation service. More information, including the full report, is available at FirestoneAuto.com.
