ETRMA responds to the provisional agreement on the Euro 7 Regulation

Brussels, Belgium – The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) welcomes the agreement between the European Parliament and Member States on the Euro 7 Regulation for motor vehicles. It is the first time the European Union (EU) sets a framework to limit tyre abrasion, which will become the fourth tyre characteristic to be regulated after rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise.

“The provisional Euro 7 agreement positions the European tire industry at the forefront of cleaner mobility”, says ETRMA Secretary General Adam McCarthy. “ETRMA is committed to achieving technically robust and workable tire abrasion test methods for all tire classes”, he adds.

The Regulation will ensure alignment with the efforts from the UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) to develop international rules regarding test methods and limits for tire abrasion. The European tire industry has pledged to make significant investments to conduct a market assessment in 2024, which will be used to support the development of regulatory abrasion limits.

“The Euro 7 regulation will help manage tire and road wear particles and drive the competitiveness of the European tire industry”, continues McCarthy.
The tire industry is now working towards the swift conclusion of the activities within the UN to establish tire abrasion limits as soon as possible and to materialize the sustainability and competitiveness gains of Euro 7.
