QDI application as a multifunctional additive in a typical PCR ply compound

by Majid Aman-Alikhani, rubber consultant.

Quinonediimine (6QDI) has been introduced as a multifunctional, cost saving additive for sulfur vulcanizable diene rubber compounds. During natural rubber mastication, 6QDI acts rapidly as a peptizer by binding broken elastomer fragments and scavenging free radicals. This prevents oxidative degradation at elevated mixing temperatures and inhibits recombination, which would otherwise increase Mooney viscosity. Additionally, 6QDI enhances scorch safety and provides both bound antioxidant and diffusible antiozonant
