Silicone elastomer technology and fabrication course to be held in February

Pomona, CA – The California Polytechnic University of Continuing Education is offering a 4-day university-accredited course offers a comprehensive overview of silicone elastomers. This course emphasis fabrication processes in injection molding liquid silicone rubber (LIM/LSR) and provides information on extrusion and calendering of high consistency silicone rubber (HCR). The class is uniquely formatted to show from start to end, the sequence of designing and fabricating with silicone rubber. Featured within this course is a one day “field trip” to M.R. Mold & Engineering during which attendees will experience manufacturing of LSR molding and tool design. The day will also introduce calendering and extrusion fabrication processes with silicone rubber.

Topics Covered: Material selection (LSR and HCR) and an introduction to the proper silicone rubber for the application; Tool design considerations including virtual simulation techniques in LSR design; Pump, press, calendar, and extruder design for peak performance; The injection molding process including machine setup and operation of pumps and automation; Secondary processes such as postcure and de-flashing with special subjects such as optical silicone molding, and overmolding in bonding to plastics and metals.
